A practical view of what happens, what you should check, and where your responsibilities begin when importing a vehicle from Japan.

The buying journey

Six clear stages. No hidden hand-offs.

The order can vary with auctions and shipping schedules, but these are the decisions every buyer should expect.

Browse current stock or send a sourcing request with your model, year, mileage, budget and destination.

A stock enquiry is not a reservation. NTC first checks that the vehicle is still available.

Check the available photographs, specifications, chassis details, condition notes and auction information before deciding.

Ask about anything unclear. The information available depends on the vehicle and its source.

Review the vehicle price, named Japanese port, shipping basis and any separately quoted freight, inspection or insurance.

Destination duties, port fees and registration are normally separate unless the quotation says otherwise.

Use the official invoice, check the beneficiary and payment reference, then send funds using the agreed method and currency.

If bank details change, stop and confirm them through a contact method you already trust.

After cleared payment, NTC coordinates the agreed export preparation, Japanese customs process, documents and vessel booking.

Schedules remain subject to carrier space, port operations, inspections, weather and route changes.

Use the shipment documents to complete destination customs, pay local charges and arrange registration and collection.

A local clearing agent can help where the destination process is unfamiliar or requires licensed representation.

Before you say yes

Keep the vehicle reference and quotation together. They should tell the same story.

Reference number, chassis details, condition evidence and current availability

Payable currency, FOB basis, freight, insurance and anything expressly excluded

Eligible vehicle age/specification, inspection rules, duties, taxes and registration

The exact person or company name and address to appear on shipping documents

NTC coordinates in Japan

The agreed work can include vehicle confirmation, invoice preparation, Japanese export formalities, delivery to port and shipping coordination.

Buyer arranges at destination

Check local rules before purchase and appoint a clearing agent when needed. Requirements differ by country and can change.
